This Donald Judd Inspired side table in cherry was designed for a client who wanted a clean shape and didn't need a drawer by their bed. It references Donald Judd’s clean geometric shapes but also incorporates some softness in the interior edge treatment. We cut a large chamfer on the interior edge that creates a pleasing gentle curve where the vertices of the cubes meet the cut (see detail photo). We don't cut the chamfer on any of the external faces so that the uninterrupted geometry of the shape remains. We bring the ‘legs’ of the table all the way to the plane of the top so that you have the contrasting endgrain visible. The field of the top is made with a shop-made cherry veneer on a stable substrate cut much thicker than conventional veneers, so that it will last a lifetime. The rest of the table is solid cherry and it can be made in a variety of domestic hardwoods. The finish is a durable low sheen spray finish to avoid marks from mugs but could be finished in an oil and wax if desired.
